Heat Pump Heating and Cooling for Plymouth Homes

An air-to-air heat pump is one of the simplest ways to cut the cost of heating a room — and the only common heating system that also cools. A slim indoor unit sits high on the wall. Outside, a compact unit draws heat from the air, even on a cold January morning, and pumps it indoors. In summer, the system runs in reverse and takes heat out of the room instead.

Air to Air Heat Pumps Plymouth designs and installs these systems for houses, flats and small businesses across the city. Most of our customers come to us for one of three reasons: their electric or storage heaters are expensive to run, a room is always cold or always too hot, or they want to move away from gas or oil without the upheaval of new radiators.

Because the indoor units blow warm air directly into the room, there’s no water to heat and no radiators to change. A single room is usually fitted in a day, and you can add more rooms later. For homes that would rather heat radiators and hot water, we also install air source heat pumps.

£2,500 off eligible installs. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can reduce the price of an air-to-air heat pump that replaces fossil fuel or electric heating. We check eligibility at the survey and handle the paperwork. How the grant works.

One System, Every Season

Most heating systems sit idle for half the year. An air-to-air heat pump earns its place in every month.

Autumn and winter: efficient heating

The outdoor unit collects heat from the air and the indoor unit releases it into the room. Even when it’s close to freezing outside, there’s enough heat in the air to warm your home. Because the system moves heat rather than making it, a well-installed heat pump typically delivers two and a half to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.

That makes it far cheaper to run than electric panel heaters, fan heaters or storage heaters, which give one unit of heat for each unit of electricity. Rooms warm up in minutes rather than hours, and each room can be set to its own temperature on its own timer.

Spring and summer: quiet cooling

Plymouth summers are getting warmer, and many homes — loft rooms, top-floor flats, south-facing bedrooms, home offices — become uncomfortable on hot days. Switch the same indoor unit to cooling and it pulls heat out of the room, lowers humidity and keeps temperatures steady through the night.

There’s no portable unit to wheel around, no hose out of the window and no extra appliance to store over winter. It’s the same system, working the other way.

Why Air-to-Air Heat Pumps Suit Plymouth

A mild coastal climate

Heat pumps work best when it isn’t bitterly cold, and Plymouth’s position on the Sound gives it some of the mildest winters in England. Hard frosts are relatively rare, so a properly sized system spends most of the winter running at good efficiency.

Lots of flats and smaller homes

From the Hoe and the Barbican to Mutley, Stonehouse and Devonport, Plymouth has a high proportion of flats, maisonettes and compact terraces. Many have electric heating and limited space for a hot water cylinder, which makes a wall-mounted air-to-air system a natural fit. Our flats and electric heating page covers this in detail.

Rooms that are hard to heat — or keep cool

Loft conversions, conservatories, extensions and garden rooms often sit outside the main heating system or run on their own electric heater. They’re also the first rooms to overheat in summer. A single indoor unit solves both problems.

Damp and condensation

Plymouth’s mild, damp air means condensation is a common complaint, especially in flats and older homes. Steady, controllable heat helps, and in cooling or dry mode the unit also removes moisture from the air.

Single-room air-to-air heat pumpAbout £1,500 to £3,500One indoor wall unit and one outdoor unit — a living room, bedroom or home office.
Two-room system (multi-split)About £3,000 to £6,000Two indoor units running from one outdoor unit, such as a lounge and main bedroom.
Whole-home system (4+ rooms)About £5,000 to £12,000+Several rooms or a whole flat or house, with longer pipe runs and more indoor units.
Air source heat pump (air-to-water)About £8,000 to £14,000Replaces a boiler and heats radiators and hot water. Before any grant; larger homes cost more.

Guide prices only. Every home is different, so your fixed price comes in a written quote after a free home survey. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can take £2,500 off an eligible air-to-air installation, or £7,500 off an eligible air source (air-to-water) heat pump. Your installer applies and deducts it from the quote.

The price depends mainly on the number of rooms, the size of each room, where the outdoor unit can go and how far the pipework has to run. Our heat pump costs page breaks this down with worked examples.

Air-to-Air or Air Source Heat Pump?

Both take heat from the outside air, but they deliver it differently.

An air-to-air heat pump blows warm air into individual rooms through wall-mounted units. It can also cool. It doesn’t heat water, so you keep your existing hot water arrangement or add a separate solution. It’s quicker and cheaper to fit, and the grant is £2,500.

An air source (air-to-water) heat pump replaces a boiler. It heats water for your radiators or underfloor heating and for your taps and showers, usually with a new hot water cylinder. It doesn’t normally cool. It’s a bigger job, and the grant is £7,500 — or £9,000 for homes replacing oil or LPG until March 2027.

As a rule of thumb, air-to-air suits flats, homes with electric heating, individual rooms and anyone who wants cooling. Air-to-water suits family homes with radiators that want to replace a gas or oil boiler completely. We install both and will recommend whichever fits your home — see air source heat pump installation.

Installing Across Plymouth

We install air-to-air heat pumps throughout the city: city-centre flats and Hoe apartments, Victorian terraces in Mutley, Lipson and St Judes, period homes in Stoke and Mannamead, and family houses in Plymstock, Plympton, Crownhill, Estover and beyond.

Every property is different. In a terrace, the outdoor unit usually goes on a rear wall or in the yard. In a flat, it may sit on a balcony or a bracket, subject to the building’s rules and the freeholder’s permission. In a conservation area, we take extra care to keep units off street-facing walls. The survey is where we work all of this out.

Air-to-Air Heat Pump Questions

It’s a heating system that takes warmth from the outside air and blows it into your rooms through slim indoor units on the wall. Run in reverse, the same system cools your home in summer. It doesn’t heat radiators or your hot water — that’s what an air-to-water (air source) heat pump does.

The equipment is very similar. Modern split air conditioners are reversible and work as air-to-air heat pumps. The difference is how they’re chosen and set up: we size and position units for efficient winter heating first, with cooling as a bonus, rather than just for hot days.

Many Plymouth homeowners can. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump when it replaces fossil fuel or electric heating in a property you own in England or Wales. The installer must be MCS-certified, and they apply for the grant and take it off your quote. See our grant page for the full rules.

As a guide, a single room costs about £1,500 to £3,500 installed, two rooms about £3,000 to £6,000, and four or more rooms about £5,000 to £12,000+. An eligible installation can have £2,500 taken off. Our costs page explains what changes the price.

Yes, if it’s sized properly for each room. Plymouth’s coastal climate is mild, with few days of hard frost, which suits heat pumps well. Efficiency drops a little in very cold weather, so we size each unit for the coldest likely days, not an average one.

Usually much cheaper. Electric panel and storage heaters turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. A well-installed air-to-air heat pump typically delivers around two and a half to four units of heat for each unit of electricity, so the same warmth costs a fraction of the price.

Many installations fall under permitted development, so no application is needed. Listed buildings, some conservation-area frontages and certain flats need more care. We check this at the survey, and you can read more on the installation page.

A single room is usually finished in a day. Two or three rooms take one to two days, and a whole-home system can take a few days. There’s no need for new radiators or a hot water cylinder.
