Heat Pumps for Every Kind of Plymouth Home
Plymouth’s housing changes from street to street. Close to the waterfront you’ll find Georgian and Victorian townhouses, many divided into flats and heated by electricity. Further out, terraces in Mutley, Lipson and Stoke give way to interwar semis, post-war estates in Whitleigh and Efford, bungalows in Plymstock and new homes in Sherford.
Each brings different questions. Where can the outdoor unit go on a narrow terrace? Will the freeholder of a converted townhouse give consent? Is the street in a conservation area? Does a 1960s semi with radiators suit an air source heat pump better than air-to-air units? We answer these at the free home survey, so your quote reflects your actual home.
The lists below show the main areas we cover. If your street isn’t mentioned, it’s almost certainly covered — put your postcode in the form.
City Centre, the Hoe & Waterfront
Georgian and Victorian townhouses, converted flats and modern apartment blocks — many in conservation areas, where outdoor unit positions need extra thought.
Central & North Plymouth
Long Victorian and Edwardian terraces, larger villas and interwar semis — a mix of gas central heating and electrically heated flats.
East Plymouth
Victorian streets close to the centre, post-war estates and the newer communities around Plympton and Sherford.
West Plymouth & the Tamar
Terraces and flats around Devonport and Stoke, and post-war estates further north towards the Tamar.
Local Things We Check
Conservation areas
Plymouth has a number of conservation areas, including parts of the Hoe, the Barbican, Stoke and Mannamead. Outdoor units on walls facing a road can need permission in these areas, so we look for discreet positions at the side or rear.
Coastal exposure
Homes close to the Sound and the Tamar face salt-laden wind. We choose outdoor unit positions and brackets with that in mind and recommend regular cleaning of the outdoor coil.
Steep streets and access
Many Plymouth streets are steep, narrow or have limited parking. We plan access, equipment delivery and any scaffolding before the installation day.
Homes off mains gas
Some properties on the edges of the city still use oil or LPG. These may qualify for the higher £9,000 air source heat pump grant until March 2027 — see the grant page.
