Heat Pump and Air Conditioning Servicing in Plymouth

An air-to-air heat pump or air conditioning system will run for many years with very little attention — but like any appliance, it works best when it’s looked after. Dust, pollen and cooking grease build up on filters and coils, drains can block, and small refrigerant leaks gradually reduce performance. A yearly service keeps your system efficient, quiet and hygienic, and is usually a condition of the manufacturer’s warranty.

We service and repair air-to-air heat pumps, split and multi-split air conditioning and air source heat pumps across Plymouth, including systems we didn’t install.

What a Service Includes

Indoor units

  • Remove and clean filters;
  • clean the coil, fan and air outlet;
  • check and clear the condensate tray and drain;
  • check the remote, sensors and operating modes.

Outdoor unit

  • Clean the coil and clear debris, leaves and cobwebs;
  • check the fan, mountings and anti-vibration feet;
  • inspect pipe insulation and the condition of the trunking.

System checks

  • Measure operating pressures and temperatures in heating and cooling;
  • check for signs of refrigerant leaks;
  • test electrical connections and safety devices;
  • record the results and advise on anything that needs attention.

Refrigerant work is carried out only by F-gas qualified engineers. For larger systems, F-gas regulations can require leak checks at set intervals and a record of the checks; we tell you if this applies to your system and can include it in your service plan.

Signs Your System Needs Attention

  • Weak airflow or rooms not reaching temperature — often blocked filters or a dirty coil, sometimes low refrigerant.
  • Water dripping from the indoor unit — usually a blocked condensate drain.
  • Unusual noises — rattling, grinding or loud buzzing from either unit.
  • Musty smells when the unit starts — a sign the coil and drain tray need cleaning.
  • Ice on the outdoor unit that doesn’t clear — a normal defrost cycle melts light frost, but persistent ice needs checking.
  • Error codes flashing on the indoor unit or controller.
  • Higher electricity bills with no change in how you use the system.

Repairs and Fault-Finding

When something goes wrong, we diagnose the fault, explain what we’ve found and give you a price before carrying out any repair. Common repairs include clearing drains, replacing fan motors or sensors, repairing refrigerant leaks and re-gassing, and replacing control boards. If a system is old and inefficient, we’ll tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.

How Often Should You Service?

For most homes, once a year is enough. A good time is late spring, before the cooling season, or early autumn, before the heating season. Systems in commercial premises, kitchens or dusty environments may need servicing more often. Between services, clean the indoor filters every few weeks during heavy use — it takes a couple of minutes and makes a noticeable difference.

Servicing Air Source Heat Pumps

Air-to-water heat pumps also need an annual service, covering the outdoor unit, the water circuit, pressures, filters, the hot water cylinder and controls. Regular servicing helps keep running costs down and is typically required to keep the warranty valid.

Service Plans

If you have several units, or a business system that needs regular checks, a service plan spreads the cost and makes sure nothing is missed. We send a reminder when your service is due and keep a record of every visit, which is useful for warranties and, for larger systems, F-gas record keeping.

Typical Costs

A domestic service typically costs roughly £70 to £250 per unit, depending on the type of system and what’s included. Additional units at the same address are usually cheaper. Repairs are quoted individually after diagnosis.

Why Servicing Matters for Efficiency

A heat pump works by moving heat across its coils. When those coils are coated in dust, or the filters are clogged, less air passes through and the system has to work harder to deliver the same warmth or cooling. The result is higher electricity bills, more wear on the compressor and fan motors, and rooms that take longer to reach temperature. A clean, correctly charged system can run noticeably more efficiently than a neglected one.

Servicing also catches small problems early. A slightly loose electrical connection, a pipe joint showing the first signs of a leak or a drain beginning to block are all quick to deal with during a routine visit, but can lead to breakdowns or water damage if left.

Coastal Homes and Outdoor Units

Plymouth is a coastal city, and outdoor units near the Sound, the Hoe, Mount Batten and the Tamar are exposed to salt in the air. Over time salt and grime build up on the outdoor coil and can encourage corrosion of fins and fixings. Homes in these areas benefit from regular cleaning of the outdoor unit and a check of the brackets and fixings, and we pay particular attention to these during a service.

Wherever you live, keep the area around the outdoor unit clear: leaves, garden furniture, bins and climbing plants all restrict airflow.

What You Can Do Between Services

  • Clean the filters: slide them out, vacuum or rinse them in lukewarm water, let them dry and refit them. Every few weeks in heavy use.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear: brush away leaves and make sure nothing is stacked against it.
  • Watch for changes: new noises, smells, water marks below the indoor unit or error codes are all worth reporting.
  • Don’t block the airflow: keep curtains and furniture away from the front of the indoor unit.
  • Leave the refrigerant circuit alone: anything involving the pipework or gas must be done by a qualified engineer.

Older Systems: Repair or Replace?

Many systems installed ten or more years ago still run well with regular servicing. Others are reaching the point where repairs become frequent, spare parts are hard to find, or the refrigerant they use is being phased down. Modern units are typically more efficient and quieter than older models, and an eligible replacement air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 grant if it replaces fossil fuel or electric heating. When we find a major fault on an older system, we’ll give you the price of the repair alongside an honest view of whether replacement would be better value.

Businesses and Commercial Systems

For offices, shops, salons and other premises, a breakdown in a heatwave or a cold snap affects staff and customers. We can schedule servicing outside opening hours, maintain records for every unit on site and, for larger systems, carry out the leak checks and record keeping required under F-gas regulations.

Servicing Questions

Yes. We service most common makes of air-to-air heat pump and split air conditioning.

Most manufacturers require annual servicing by a qualified engineer to keep the extended warranty valid. Check your warranty terms.

Typically an hour or so for a single-room system, longer for multi-room or commercial systems.

Yes, and you should. Your installer will show you how. Leave the coils, drains and refrigerant circuit to a qualified engineer.

Usually it’s a blocked condensate drain, which is a quick fix. Switch the unit off and book a visit to avoid water damage.

Light frost is normal in cold, damp weather, and the system runs a defrost cycle to clear it, sometimes with a little steam. If ice builds up and doesn’t clear, book a check.

Yes. Performance often drops gradually, so you may not notice it. An annual service keeps the system efficient, catches problems early and usually keeps the warranty valid.
